I have a passion for working with shelter dogs for five+ years now. I volunteer currently at SpokAnimal where I help manage the program that allows dogs to be part of doggie play groups.

I support many animal rights, conservation and environmental organizations. In August 2018, I participated in an Earthwatch Expedition in Waterton Lakes National Park where I was able to assist environmental scientists with research on how elk, wolves, fire, and bison affect that ecosystem.

Wherever I travel, one of my favorite pastimes is to visit the local church in town.

Hiking Hidden Lake

I love to hike around the Puget Sound when living on Vashon Island, around the Inland Northwest when in Spokane and whatever trails I can find while on travel. This is me at one of my favorite hikes near Mount Baker called Hidden Lake.

Yvonne Higgins Leach’s second collection of poems In the Spaces Between Us hit the shelves this fall (2023), published by Kelsay Books. Her first collection Another Autumn was published by Cherry Grove Collections in 2014. Her poems connect to the world in a big way⸺ through an empathetic heart that seeks to understand the mysteries of the human experience. She does this through perfectly chosen images, simple language, and a genuine voice. She spent decades balancing a career in communications and public relations, raising a family, and pursuing her love of writing poetry. Her latest passion is working with shelter dogs. She splits her time living on Vashon Island and in Spokane, Washington.
